Artists
Emma Baker
Emma Baker is a New York based artist from San Francisco, incorporating digital distortion techniques in her paintings. She is a graduate of Colby College, with a dual major in Studio Art (Painting) and Art History. While at Colby College, she worked as the Homer Colby Fellow at the Portland Museum of Art and as the Graphic Design Assistant for the Colby College Museum of Art. She currently works as the Media Coordinator at Tina Kim Gallery in NYC. Artist Statement: My work explores self-perception and the alienating experience of constantly seeing oneself digitally. The layering of distorted, pathetic self portraits create figures which are hesitant to reveal themselves, yet explore vulnerability through color and gaze. Digital distortion is a technique I use within every work, yet it is hidden behind traditional painting mediums.
Cal Waichler
Cal Waichler is a Washington based artist, integrating her environmental research experience into narratorial compositions. She is a graduate of Colby College, majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Studio Art. For the past year, Cal has worked as a Streamflow Restorationist and Outreach Artist for the Methow Beaver Project in Washington state, as well as an Art Instructor for Inspiring Girls Expeditions in Alaska. Artist Statement: I am a printmaker with deep roots in North Central Washington. My printmaking and collage explores my connection to place, climate change, and the complex ecological stories that occur underfoot, overhead, and out of sight. In college, I built my creative practice as a means of working through and confronting environmental issues. Today, carving and printing a block is my evolving meditation on the challenges of our time, which often coalesce around the importance of water in the American West.
Nikki Ekström
Nikki Ekström is a Boston based artist, incorporating ink wash, oil paint, sculpture, found materials, and light across mediums. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, with a degree in Fine Arts. Additionally, she studied Photojournalism in Madrid, Spain at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. While at University of Massachusetts Lowell, she worked as the Gallery Management Intern for The Arts and Research Collaborative in Lowell, MA. Artist Statement: My work aims to figure out my relationship with the concept of spirituality. I create work that breathes their essence into the atmosphere, finding comfort in something greater, beyond the physical form. My creative process is usually induced by music, meditation, dreams, or movements. I have always felt the need to create, whether through paint, sculpture, dance, or photography. I see the arts as an internal healing practice manifesting in physical form.
Annika Hogan
Annika Hogan is a New York based multimedia artist, focusing on sculpture incorporating themes of environmental sustainability. She is a graduate of Colby College, with a major in Studio Art, concentrating in Sculpture, and a minor in Environmental Studies. During her time at Colby College, she worked as a Studio Assistant at Stejer Studios and as a sustainability consultant at Thornton Tomasetti. Artist Statement: My dream as an artist is to bring attention to existing, natural beauty through my art. I would like to make the unconscious conscious, in order to change the way people consider and treat our environment. As I continue to explore mediums with which I can create, I hope to expand my practice and hone new skills.
John Mendizabal
John Mendizabal is a Boston based multimedia artist, incorporating film, photography, and sculpture that focuses on creating immersive space for his audiences. He graduated from Boston College with a major in International Studies and minors in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies. While at Boston College, he worked as a Student Ambassador for the McMullen Museum of Art and as a Technician in the Boston College Makerspace. He currently works as the Woodshop Manager at NuVu Innovation High School. Artist Statement: My art is about finding beauty in the scenes and forms we overlook. Routine can rob our imagination, but it can also inspire us. I intend to present my life and experience in unique ways which prompt us to examine what we find beautiful and why–to challenge us to pause and find more wonder in our routines.
